Nanjing, The Southern Capital

Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China

Nanjing literally translates into South Capital and was one of the original capitals of China during the Ming Dynasty before they moved it to Beijing, the North Capital. A few hours west of Shanghai, Nanjing is a very large bustling city featuring beautiful parks and is the birthplace of Dr. Sun Yatsen.

This city has a special place in my heart because it is the birthplace of my wife. I am fortunate enough to experience Nanjing as if I weren’t a tourist when I travel to visit her family.

The people in the streets are what makes Nanjing a special place. The people are friendly and very curious about westerners. Some will bend over backwards to accommodate you. One woman wanted to share her breakfast with me and another wanted to show off his calligraphy skills. He drew a crowd around him and everybody had a friendly debate as to what his writings meant.

When visiting the southern capital, the best time of year is spring and autumn.
